The project is considered the first of its kind in the kingdom and among all universities in the Middle East and North Africa.
It received a special royal interest and was launched in June 2016 with a huge opening ceremony under the patronage of his Royal Highness Prince El Hassan Bin Talal.

Total capacity is 5 MW, divided as follows: 4 MW ground mounted solar farm- Medium voltage connected, 1 MW canopies and carports – Low voltage connected.
